Damato of the Day Is... "Support a Very Worthy Cause"

February 17, 2009
It is Sunday morning and I have just returned from a little jog with a few thousand of my closest friends at the National Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer. This was the second annual event and since it is in my old stomping grounds at Jacksonville Beach, Fla., thought I might as well give it a spin.

It is Sunday morning and I have just returned from a little jog with a few thousand of my closest friends at the National Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer. This was the second annual event and since it is in my old stomping grounds at Jacksonville Beach, Fla., thought I might as well give it a spin. Besides, it is in support of a very worthy cause that many of us can relate to in a special way, even those of us of the male persuasion. To be clear, I ran the HALF marathon.

The first impression I got waking up at too-early thirty to catch a shuttle to the start line was, “Why did we ever leave this place?” Do not get me wrong - we love Atlanta. But here I was about to go running on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean on February 15th in shorts and a T-shirt. It was a gray day, actually perfect for a run, and the temperature started in the low 60s and barely moved the whole time I was out pounding the pavement.

Since part of my work life involves logistics and sometimes event planning, I am always looking to see how large-scale events like this are put together. This one was handled by real pros and the experience they provided was top-drawer. I just came to run for a few hours and support a good cause, but all the runners were treated like rock stars. It was all very good fun. More about the event and its mission is here: www.breastcancermarathon.com/.

So what does this possibly have to do with roofing? Well, to tell the truth not very much, save for the thin-film wraps they passed out at the end of the run. Hey, shelter is shelter, and when you finish a run your hot sweaty body becomes cold and wet pretty quick. These are actually radiant barriers just the same as those touted for some roof decking and insulation systems. Bright reflective silver on one side and advertising graphics on the other, the particular version passed out today was the Heatsheet - www.heatsheets.com in case you are interested in more info.
