The December 2010 issue ofRoofing Contractormagazine will have a breakdown of over a dozen speakers who attended the Best of Success (BOS) conference held in September in Denver.

While the December issue will focus on stories about those who spoke at BOS, now is a good time to give you a sneak preview of what to expect in the final issue of 2010.

Don Kennedy, President & CEO, Kennedy Roofing CO. Inc., told BOS attendees that it is important to know what the customer is thinking. “It’s important to get into people’s minds,” said Kennedy of Nashville, Tenn.

Kennedy, who started his career in the roofing industry in 1979, is past president of the Greater Nashville Roofing Contractors Association and a past NRCA board member.

He recently set up “Profit Centers” in his company where he re-invests funds that are typically not profits. The company then matches these funds for new equipment.

“We have over $100,000 of matching funds for equipment in our company,” said Kennedy, who set up a recycling center, “Our sheet metal division recycles metal. They have taken ownership.”

Kennedy, who is now a NRLRC (National Roofing Legal Resources Center) board member and a member of the CertainTeed Corporation’s “Roofer’s Advisory Council,” said a company needs to “partner with your employees.”

“Employees will tell you areas they are making mistakes,” he said, noting a Proverb: ‘Where there is no vision, the people will perish.’ “Your company vision must be planned; simple; and a reflection of its decisions and actions.

“We just don’t want to show up for a pay check,” Kennedy continued. “Have a simple plan.” To read more about out annual Best of Success conference held in September and to learn more about what Don Kennedy had to say, look for the December 2010 issue ofRoofing Contractor.
