The U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division reports that it recovered $288,341 in back wages for eight workers after a commercial roofing contractor incorrectly classified its employees.
According to the division, CHU Contracting out of Chantilly, Va., had
the workers performing sheet metal work on a federally funded project at the Potomac Yard Metro Station in Alexandria, Va. By incorrectly classifying the workers as laborers and roofers, the employer failed to pay the proper prevailing wages, holiday and overtime rates, which are violations of the Davis-Bacon and Related Acts.
