The Alliance awarded a general scholarship to Josiah Martin of Richmond, Va., son of Bruce Martin, estimator & project coordinator for Blue Ridge Roofing Inc., Charlottesville, Va.
Additionally, individuals or companies that commit a minimum of $100,000 to the scholarship fund can choose to name a scholarship and participate in recipient selection each year. A second Firestone Scholarship was awarded to Karlee Cox of Clearwater, Minn., daughter of Donald Cox, architectural sheet metal installer for Dalco Roofing & Sheet Metal, Plymouth, Minn.
The Alliance also renewed eight Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarships for the 2013-14 school year. The general scholarship recipients include: Gabriella Abbondanza of Southwick, Mass., who is attending Suffolk University, Boston; Alexis Belote of Red Oak, Texas, who is attending University of Texas, Austin; Sean Cawley of Birmingham, Ala., who is attending Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn.; Neil Hourahan of Saunderstown, R.I., who is attending University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and Kara Sosinski of Hudson, Ohio, who is attending Ohio Northern University, Ada.
The Fred Good Scholarship was renewed for Carter Hruby of Fargo, N.D., who is attending North Dakota State University, Fargo; the Firestone Scholarship was renewed for Alexis Plachecki of Taylor, Wis., who is attending University of Minnesota: Twin Cities, Minneapolis-St. Paul; and the Dan Cohen Scholarship was renewed for Jonathan Poore of Harrogate, Tenn., who is attending Tennessee Technological University, Cookeville.
Each recipient will receive a $5,000 award. Awards are renewable for up to three years of undergraduate study or until a bachelor's degree is earned provided recipients renew annually and maintain a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent).
A total of $50,000 in scholarships was awarded for the 2013-14 school year — $40,000 for renewals and $10,000 for new recipients.

The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress was established within the National Roofing Foundation (NRF) to create an endowment fund to serve as a highly focused resource for the roofing industry and its customers. The Alliance's objectives are to conduct research and education projects that support high-quality programs for roofing contractors; ensure timely and forward-thinking industry responses to major economic and technological issues; and enhance the long-term viability and attractiveness of the industry to roofing workers. The Alliance also reaches out to the roofing community and its members and helps fund efforts dedicated to good works and charitable giving.
