The perimeter and corners of low-slope buildings are the most vulnerable areas on the roof. The perimeter roof edge is the first line of defense in a wind event, but perimeter edge metal is one of the first items to be value engineered out of the system. Though a small part of a building’s overall cost, the roof edge carries a significant risk of liability. It’s estimated that 60 percent of litigation claims related to a building originate from the roof area, and 60 percent of roof warranty claims are attributed to edge metal failures. This course will define the perimeter roof edge and explain the importance of proper edge metal design and installation to the overall security of the roof system. It will provide an overview of the relevant codes and standards, including the ANSI/SPRI ES-1 standard and test methods. It will also explain how wind design pressures are calculated and how Exceptional Metal Products can help contractors to meet the needs of proper edge metal design and installation with aesthetically pleasing, ES-1 compliant products.
