Sika Sarnafil Announces 2010 Project of the Year Winners

Sika Sarnafil announced the winners of its third annual Roof Consultant Project of the Year competition.

CANTON, Mass. – Sika Sarnafil announced the winners of its third annual Roof Consultant Project of the Year competition.

First place was awarded to Curtainwall Design Consulting, Inc. (CDC, Inc.) of Las Vegas, Nev.; second place to Elkin/Sobolta & Associates of Rutherford, N.J.; and Dry Tech Engineering LLC of Atlanta, Ga., won the third place honor. The competition recognizes and celebrates excellence in roofing design.

“These roofing consultant organizations exhibited outstanding problem solving skills, with the end-result being that building owners were provided with long-lasting roofing solutions,” said Brian J. Whelan, Senior Vice President of Sika Sarnafil. “It is a pleasure to acknowledge, in all three instances, a job well done.”

Sika Sarnafil evaluated the competition entries and selected the winners based upon criteria that included creative problem solving, project challenges, design solutions, and unique skills employed to ensure the success of the project.

The winning first place entry from CDC, Inc., involved the reroofing of the 35,000 square foot City Hall building in Henderson, Nev. This combination low/steep slope roof is highly visible, and the city wanted to replicate the appearance of the previous standing seam metal roof. The roof also had to be watertight, of course, and meet a targeted budget. CDC proposed Sika Sarnafil’s proven Décor Roof system, which met wind resistance requirements, addressed expansion detailing needs, interfaced with onsite cladding systems, and economically provided the appearance of a standing seam metal roof.

The second place winning project was from Elkin/Sobolta, a key member of the team responsible for a multi-level vegetated roof installation at the Rutgers University Business School in Newark, N.J. Three distinct green roofs totaling nearly 10,000 square feet were designed and installed on multiple levels to respond to different use requirements and included both Extensive and Intensive vegetated growth areas. Elkin/Sobolta selected Sika Sarnafil’s monolithic, heat-welded membrane to address the University's desire for long-lasting, watertight roofs that would be durable, require minimal maintenance, and include a single source warranty for the entire green roof assembly.

Dry Tech Engineering was the third place winner for specifying the lightweight Decor Roof system from Sika Sarnafil to retrofit an existing metal roof. Budget constraints had kept municipal officials from replacing the standing seam metal roof at the 18,000 square foot Center for Mental Health Services in Columbus, Ga., despite the fact that it had been leaking for years. Sika Sarnafil’s vinyl membrane was installed over the metal, thus avoiding tear-off expenses, and the Décor system battens effectively and economically simulated the appearance of the standing metal seams. Most importantly, the facility is now leak-free.
