JUPITER, Fla. — Oklahoma-based Saratoga Roofing is hosting the Fifth Annual Golf Outing to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), which will be held on June 8 at the Abacoa Golf Club in Jupiter, Fla. Two friends have come together to help host the event in memory of a family member who lost the fight against lymphoma.

After losing his father, Milt Thackaberry, to lymphoma, Mike Thackaberry decided he wanted to do something in memory of his father. So in 2009, with the help of friend Brian Muller, he founded the Annual Golf Outing that benefits the LLS. The tournament has since continued to grow, and after four years has successfully raised more than $50,000 and includes more than 100 participants each year. All money raised benefits the local Palm Beach Area Chapter of the LLS.

“Our need is great,” Palm Beach Area Chapter Executive President Pam Payne said. “Someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer every four minutes, and someone dies every 10 minutes.”

To date, the LLS nationally has invested more than $875 million in research aimed at helping all blood cancer patients live longer, healthier lives.

Saratoga Roofing will be the title sponsor of this year’s outing. “We are happy to be the title sponsor and support such a worthy cause,” President Denver Green said. “Anytime we can give back to the community and help an employee, we know we are making a good investment.”

Thackaberry, who is an employee of Saratoga, said he is overwhelmed at the amount of support given by his company and other local merchants. Major annual supporters of the outing include Florida-based Therma Seal Roof Systems, owned by Dave Wikel, and Factory Direct Supply.

“We look forward to this outing every year,” Factory Direct Supply Part Owner Gary Muller said. “Each year it gets bigger and better, and best of all it’s for a great cause.”

The tournament, which is a four-man scramble, will have a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Lunch will be provided, with an awards ceremony directly following.
